| Fast lane ez pass |
Last morning, when I was on my way to a friend's place in another city, I was stopped by a toll booth. In my country, we were required to hand out a certain amount for which we were given a slip, before entering a certain region. Thinking that it worked the same way here, I reached for my wallet, when suddenly I was interrupted by an official. He looked at my car, as though searching for something illegal, and asked me if I had a fast lane ez pass.
I was puzzled with the question and asked him what he meant by an ez pass. Maybe he thought I was an alien, as he pointed at a car on the next toll booth and said 'Fast lane ez pass'. I had never been more confused in my life before and I decided to step out of the car.
I told him that I was a foreign student living here for the past few months and that I had no idea about what he meant. Understanding me then, he smiled and told me what a fast lane pass meant. A fast lane pass or ez pass are battery operated transponders that communicate with the reader equipment that are built in toll booths. So, the holders of such a pass need not stop to pay cash, as the amount of cash need to be deducted are deducted through the pass installed in the vehicle.
This was something new and intriguing to me and as I shook hands with the official, I payed him in cash and got in my car. Once inside the car, I realized how different this country was from my home-land. With this said, I simply drove off.
